Detroit, (October 26, 2022) – The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) today announced November programming in the Peter D. and Julie F. Cummings Cube (The Cube), located within the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center at 3711 Woodward Avenue in Detroit.

On November 4 at 8 p.m., The Dr. Prof. Leonard King Orchestra will present Detroit Rutude Music (Roots & Attitude) in The Cube. Dr. Prof. Leonard King is a native Detroiter who has accumulated international acclaim as a drummer, vocalist, composer, and bandleader—his orchestra specializes in an eclectic mix of rhythms, harmonies, and melodies. The group will perform compositions by Lyman Woodard, Ron English, King, and arrangements of compositions by some of his favorite composers. This performance is sponsored by the Lyman Woodard Organization for the Arts.

On November 6 at 6 p.m., the Detroit City Orchestra Plus will debut in The Cube. The Detroit City Orchestra is an all-star Detroiter band celebrating the diversity of music pioneered in Detroit including blues, rock, soul, R&B, and jazz. All compositions and arrangements on this program are by Detroit artists, including Marcus Belgrave, Stevie Wonder, Holland–Dozier–Holland, John Lee Hooker, Walt Szymanski, and Marcus Elliot.

On November 11 at 8 p.m., Spoken word artist LaShaun phoenix Moore returns to The Cube to host Poetry & Music: blk: erasure and silencing resistance, a poetry and music showcase aimed to interrogate the effects of silencing rooted in discrimination based on the poem and short film by 2022 Kresge Artist Fellow, Jassmine Parks. The evening will also feature performances from Detroit’s finest poets and musical sets by Detroit R&B/Soul vocalist Johdi and DJ Stacye J

Please note: the DSO does not appear on these performances.

2022-2023 SEASON DSO SAFETY POLICIES: The DSO no longer requires audiences to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test to attend performances. Masks are optional although strongly recommended at DSO performances, particularly when Wayne County and surrounding communities are in the high or "red" category as defined by the CDC. The DSO asks audience members to do their part to create a safe environment for everyone and encourages those who are not feeling well to stay home.

Programming in the Peter D. & Julie F. Cummings Cube is supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Peter and Julie Cummings. The Cube is the DSO’s black box performance space located within the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center. The CUBE is defined for the curated, urban, boundless experiences it delivers to audiences. The venue is designed to not only be accessible, but also relevant to communities the DSO serves through consciously curated arts programming that spans across musical and artistic genres.

Spoken word artist LaShaun phoenix Moore returns to The Cube to host an evening of spoken word, live music, and film, featuring 2022 Kresge Arts Fellow Jassmine Parks. The evening is inspired by Parks’s award-winning short film, blk, and showcases performances from Detroit’s finest poets, musical sets by R&B and Soul vocalist Johdi, and DJ Stacye J. Through film, poetry, and musical performances, artists will challenge the erasure of personal narratives prioritizing silencing through discrimination against blackness and welcoming other marginalized experiences from all walks of life. blk encourages folx to feel emboldened to affirm the value in their stories through the power of written and spoken word.
