A native of Rhode Island, Joseph Becker was appointed Principal Percussion of the Detroit Symphony in 2012. Prior to his time in Michigan, he was a member of the Jacksonville Symphony. He has played with many orchestras—including the Boston Symphony, National Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Oregon Symphony, and Kansas City Symphony.

Becker completed his bachelor’s degree from the New England Conservatory of Music, studying with Frank Epstein and Will Hudgins; as well as his master’s degree from Boston University, studying with Tim Genis. A Fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center from 2008 to 2009, he is an avid chamber music performer and a member of New Music Detroit.
