“No one can love the country as much as I do,” insisted Beethoven. “For surely woods, trees, and rocks produce the echo which man desires to hear.” The composer takes us on a scenic walk with his “Pastoral” Symphony No. 6.

His scenes recall a visit to the countryside, a gentle brook, a “merry gathering of country people,” a sudden downpour, and ultimately feelings of gratitude to God. On the first half, Alisa Weilerstein returns to Detroit to perform Barber’s demanding Concerto for Cello.
