Civic Jazz Ensembles

Civic Jazz Orchestra

The Civic Jazz Orchestra provides Michigan's premiere young jazz musicians with pre-professional training that builds upon the strong tradition of jazz in Detroit. Musicians benefit from training provided by leading professionals in the jazz field, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra's unparalleled facilities and a season of concert presentations at the Max M. Fisher Music Center. Civic Jazz Orchestra rehearses Wednesday evenings at The Max.

Civic Jazz Band

Due to the growing need in the community for another high-caliber youth jazz ensemble, the Civic Jazz Band was created in 2005. This ensemble follows the great model of jazz pedagogy that made the Civic Jazz Orchestra the top jazz program for young people in the Detroit area. Civic Jazz Band rehearses Wednesday evenings at The Max.

Civic Jazz Concert Band

For intermediate-level jazz students, the Civic Jazz Cpncert Band follows the same model as the two upper jazz ensembles but places greater emphasis on developing ensemble and improvisation skills, and other skills specific to the genre of jazz. Civic Jazz Concert Band rehearses Wednesday evenings at The Max.

Improvization and Combos

Unique to the Civic Jazz Program are Improvisation Clinics and combos that run weekly before jazz band rehearsals. Led by jazz mentors, these clinics and combos offer students an outlet to hone their improvisation skills in a more individualized setting. All students in the Civic Jazz Program are placed in either a combo or clinic at the beginning of the Civic season.
