Pictures at an Exhibition
Pictures at an Exhibition
Friday, November 15 — Sunday, November 17 2019
Music Director Laureate Leonard Slatkin returns to Orchestra Hall to conduct the world premiere of Mohammed Fairouz's Another Time and Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Fairouz’s Another Time is the third collaboration between the DSO and the esteemed composer, most recently following 2016’s Desert Sorrows.
Mussorgsky, blindsided by the sudden passing of his close friend Victor Hartmann, turned his pain into art: he composed Pictures at an Exhibition, a suite of musical paintings for piano, inspired by Hartmann's sketches. Maurice Ravel later brightened this imagined gallery with the orchestral arrangement that's so popular today.

“ The ensemble ascended to a furious climax topped by a percussive thwack as if God were lowering the final boom. The players of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra faded away and soloist Maya Beiser was left alone, singing a prayerful song in a long, emotionally moving cadenza that left a feeling of ritual in the air. ”
