Practice yoga outdoors to live music performed by DSO ensembles! A Detroit Yoga Lab certified instructor leads a limited-capacity socially distant group yoga session in the DSO’s Sosnick Courtyard open to all skill levels. Experience the bliss of warm summer air and the sense of community that comes from safely enjoying live music and yoga with others. Namaste.

Joseph Becker

Principal Percussion

A native of Rhode Island, Joseph Becker was appointed Principal Percussion of the Detroit Symphony in 2012. Prior to his time in Michigan, he was a member of the Jacksonville Symphony. He has played with many orchestras—including the Boston Symphony, National Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Oregon Symphony, and Kansas City Symphony.

Joseph completed his bachelor’s degree from the New England Conservatory of Music, studying with Frank Epstein and Will Hudgins; as well as his master’s degree from Boston University, studying with Tim Genis. A Fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center from 2008 to 2009, he is an avid chamber music performer and a member of New Music Detroit.

Jeremy Epp

Principal Timpani

Canadian timpanist Jeremy Epp holds the Richard and Mona Alonzo Chair as Principal Timpanist of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. His 2014 appointment in Detroit was preceded by four seasons as the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra's Principal Timpanist, prior to which he held the same position with the Erie Philharmonic.

Jeremy has made appearances with several North American orchestras as Guest Principal Timpanist including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the National Symphony Orchestra, and the Minnesota Orchestra among others. He has recorded with a number of ensembles in the United States, Canada, and Europe, and can be heard on several recent Detroit Symphony Orchestra recordings.

A native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Jeremy studied extensively with Jauvon Gilliam while performing as a regular extra musician with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. In the years leading up to his first orchestral appointment, he attended the Cleveland Institute of Music, where his teachers were Cleveland Orchestra principal musicians Paul Yancich and Richard Weiner.

In addition to having been appointed as a Lecturer of Percussion at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance in 2018, Jeremy has presented clinics and masterclasses internationally at various institutions and events, including the 2017 Percussive Arts Society International Convention. His website and blog,, is a resource for amateur and professional timpanists and educators.

He is a proud endorser of Remo drumheads and Freer Percussion products and performs on a 1975 set of American Drum Company Mark XI timpani.

Andrés Pichardo-Rosenthal

Assistant Principal Percussion

Born in Managua, Nicaragua and raised in Los Angeles, Andrés Pichardo-Rosenthal began piano lessons at the age of six and percussion at age 11. He received his undergraduate degree at Rice University, his masters at the University of Southern California and completed his education at the New England Conservatory.

Andrés has performed with esteemed orchestras around the country, such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the New world Symphony and the Hawaii Symphony—to name a few. Additionally, he has performed on motion picture scores in Los Angeles and musical theater shows in Houston. Andrés joined the DSO in September of 2014.

James Ritchie

Assistant Principal Timpani and Percussion

James (Jay) Ritchie joined the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 2016 as Assistant Principal Timpanist and Section Percussionist. In 2019, he was featured as soloist with the DSO in Philip Glass’ Concerto Fantasy for Two Timpanists and Orchestra along with DSO colleague Jeremy Epp. Prior to his DSO appointment, Jay was a regular extra with the Cleveland Orchestra, Principal Timpanist of the Blossom Festival Orchestra and performed frequently with other groups in the Cleveland area. Jay has also appeared with the National Symphony Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, Ottawa’s National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Malaysian Philharmonic and the Buffalo Philharmonic.

Jay spends his summers performing at a variety of festivals—most recently the Sun Valley Music Festival. Previously, he was Principal Timpanist with the National Repertory Orchestra, and has also participated in the Tanglewood Music Center, the Pacific Music Festival, and the Britten-Pears Orchestra.

An active educator, Jay maintains a private teaching studio in Detroit, and also works often with percussionists in the DSO’s Civic Youth Ensembles. He is an endorser and clinician for Freer Percussion and Remo, and has given masterclasses at major conservatories and universities throughout the US.

A native of Blacksburg, Virginia, Jay began studying piano at age 8 and percussion at age 11. He received his Bachelor of Music from Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with Duncan Patton, Chris Lamb, and She-e Wu, and completed his Master of Music at the Cleveland Institute of Music as a student of Paul Yancich and Marc Damoulakis.
