SIGHT & SOUND: The DSO and Wasserman Projects Gallery present a night of music connected to Scott Hocking's exhibition titled "SEVENTEEN SHITTY MOUNTAINS". Composed of sewer pipes and other concrete elements, this megalithic installation investigates, honors, and re-envisions the found materials and neglected spaces of our urban landscape. Through the use of shockingly fluorescent colors and humor, the work speaks to the absurdity of what we choose to honor and sanctify and what we decide to merely discard.

Wasserman Projects

Sight & Sound: DSO x Wasserman

Tuesday, March 19, 2019 @ 7 PM

at Wasserman Projects

SIGHT & SOUND: The DSO and Wasserman Projects Gallery present a night of music connected to "The Gold Room,” an exhibition of works by artist Esther Shalev-Gerz. First exhibited in The Swedish History Museum, these portraits capture and unfold stories through conversation around five artifacts from the museum’s collection and five objects brought overseas by refugees. Highlighting the cultural and personal value of these objects, Shalev-Gerz floats a gold square over the works that veil the images while simultaneously opening passageways into the past.

Tied to the idea of human migration and exploring what drives individuals to leave their homelands, DSO Musicians will perform works of composers who wrote during oppressed times and war. Although baptized in a Christian church, Mendelssohn’s works were largely influenced by his Jewish ancestry and maintained sympathy to Jewish people despite rampant anti-Semitism and his family’s own rejection of their Jewish identity in the late eighteenth century. Shostakovich, who was censored by Soviet authorities, completed his String Quartet No. 3 in 1946 after the end of World War II and questions the hardships of war—with an appropriately depressed but ultimately hopeful sentiment.

Program: MENDELSSOHN String Quartet No. 3; SHOSTAKOVICH String Quartet No. 3
