Shannon Orme

Shannon Orme was appointed Bass Clarinet of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 2007. Prior to joining the DSO, she served as Co-Principal Clarinet of the Hyogo Performing Arts Center Orchestra in Japan. She has also performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the IRIS Orchestra, the Bergen Filharmoniske, and the World Orchestra for Peace. Orme spends her summers at the Grand Teton Music Festival, where she is also a frequent chamber musician.

Orme enjoys the many facets of performance opportunities within the DSO family. She is a frequent performer in the community as part of DSO's Detroit Neighborhood Initiative and especially enjoys playing for children at DMC Children’s Hospital's Music Therapy Program. As a result of her commitment to this work, Orme was one of five musicians nationwide to receive the 2016 Ford Musician Award for Excellence in Community Service, sponsored by the Ford Motor Company Fund and the League of American Orchestras. She is a dedicated educator and currently maintains a private studio at Wayne State University.

An advocate for contemporary music, Orme is a member of New Music Detroit where she has collaborated with today's emerging composers and has participated in the group’s annual 12-hour marathon, Strange Beautiful Music. Orme also performed at the Lucerne Festival Academy under Pierre Boulez for two seasons as well as the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble.

Upon graduating from the Interlochen Arts Academy, Orme attended Northwestern University (BM) and the University of Southern California (MM). Her primary teachers include Jean Miller, Richard Hawkins, J. Lawrie Bloom, and Yehuda Gilad.
