DSO member since 1984
A member of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra since 1984, Victoria King is a native of the Detroit area. She began music studies at the age of 7, and took up the bassoon at 12.
Prior to her appointment to the DSO, Victoria was a member of the Michigan Opera Theatre Orchestra. Additionally, she is a founder and member of the Detroit Chamber Winds, and serves on the board of directors.
Victoria received both a bachelor’s and master’s degree as a bassoonist and as a woodwind specialist from the University of Michigan, where she studied with L. Hugh Cooper. Continuing with post-graduate studies, she worked under the guidance of DSO Principal Bassoon Robert Williams at Wayne State University. Other teachers include Phillip Austin and Robert Barris.
Victoria has made recordings with the Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings on the Koch International label. She has appeared at the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, Pine Mountain Music Festival, and Interlochen. Tours with Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings have included performances and master classes at many universities in Colorado, Wisconsin, Texas, New Mexico, Ohio and Michigan.
Victoria maintains an active teaching studio.
