Jennifer Wey Fang

Violinist Jennifer Wey Fang joined the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 2013 as Assistant Concertmaster. A native of Saratoga, California, Fang began her musical studies at age three as part of the Suzuki Program. As a child, she was invited to perform at the De Young Museum in San Francisco and at a special program for Governor Gray Davis at the California State Capitol. She made her solo debut with orchestra at age 10 and went on to perform with various west coast orchestras including the Peninsula Symphony and the Nova Vista Symphony. She has also appeared as soloist with the DSO since becoming a member. Fang’s early influences to pursue a musical career include her participation in the Perlman Music Program and the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra.

As a firm believer that chamber music creates not only better orchestras but also better people, Fang has been actively involved in chamber ensembles since her childhood. She was featured at Carnegie Hall with her San Francisco-based piano trio, and her string quartet won the New England Conservatory's Honors Ensemble Award. Fang has performed as a substitute musician with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Symphony, and the New World Symphony, and has attended the Pacific Music Festival, the Tanglewood Music Center, the Aspen Music Festival, and the Spoleto Festival USA on full scholarships. She received her bachelor’s degree from New England Conservatory in 2012 as a student of Lucy Chapman and completed one year of graduate studies at Rice University with Cho-Liang Lin before joining the DSO.

Fang owes all achievements to her loving family and patient teachers, whose unconditional faith and support make it possible for her to pursue her musical endeavors. She lives in Royal Oak with her husband Will and their dogs Eliot and Brownie. Aside from music, Fang enjoys rock climbing, food, and exploring the outdoors.
