Strange Beautiful Music at the Cube to include:

7:00pm - Grey Rose Grant
'Little Histories'
'Little Histories', by Grey Rose Grant, is a folk opera that explores death ritual and our distanced relationship with death in the U.S. Personal histories from the composer's own life are swirled together in a world of magical realism where grandmothers become trees, where Icarus is a depressed mortician, where death has made its presence known, mixed with histories at large such as the birth of the U.S. funeral industry. The work investigates how we memorize our dead, how we grieve, how we die, and how impermanence shapes meaning in our lives.

8:00pm - Vicky Chow
Philip Glass Piano Etudes (Book I)
Frequent NMD collaborator Vicky Chow will present all ten of Philip Glass's Piano Etudes from Book I

9:00pm - New Music Detroit
NMD will be joined by special guest Matthew Duvall of Eighth Blackbird. Featuring music for piano, cello, percussion, and voice by Richard Reed Perry, Katherine Balch, Ninfea Cruttwell-Reade, Thomas Osborne, Maxim Shalygin, and Aart Strootman.

10:00pm - Virago with pianist Michael Malis
Listening From Darkness
Listening From Darkness, presented by Virago, finds the genre-defying ensemble pairing their two most recent commissions to create this new evening-length program. Consisting of From Darkness We Awaken by Michael Malis and Listening for Bells by Harriet Steinke, this is a program of heart-first sonic explorations. Relying heavily on improvisation, empathy, and deep listening, these two pieces strike different but complementary tones.
