Concert Description

Pro Musica of Detroit presents the Escher String Quartet

The Escher String Quartet has received acclaim for its profound musical insight and rare tonal beauty. The quartet consists of violinists Adam Barnett-Hart and Aaron Boyd, violist Pierre LaPointe, and cellist Brook Speltz. Each an extraordinary artist in his own right, together they create a unique chemistry that lives up to their ensemble’s namesake, Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher. The ensemble is inspired by the artist’s signature method of illustrating the interplay between complex and disparate individual elements to form a single, unified whole. As a lizard drawn by Escher seems to jump from a sheet of paper to clamber across a busy desk and back into its original page again, the quartet reveals extraordinary perceptions and the remarkable narrative within each composition they perform.

A former BBC New Generation Artist, the quartet has performed at the BBC Proms at Cadogan Hall and is a regular guest at Wigmore Hall. In its home town of New York City, the quartet serves as Artists of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. In the United Kingdom, the quartet has toured with pianist Benjamin Grosvenor, who also has performed before Pro Musica and DSO audiences. In 2013, the quartet became one of the very few chamber ensembles to be awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant.
