Concert Description

Leonard Slatkin kicks off his 9th season as DSO Music Director with violinist extraordinaire Hilary Hahn, plus Bernstein and Gershwin classics and an exciting world premiere by innovative Spanish classical, soundtrack, and video game composer Ferran Cruixent.



ConcerTalk 9/29 at 6:30 PM & 9/30 at 7 PM: Get the most out of each Classical concert with informal presentations in Orchestra Hall one hour before the performance begins. Enjoy special guests, lectures, or performances that illuminate the program and provide a behind-the-scenes look at the art of making music! Leonard Slatkin, conductor  Bio

Internationally renowned conductor Leonard Slatkin began his tenure as Music Director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 2008. In addition, Maestro Slatkin is the Music Director of the Orchestre National de Lyon, a position he has held since 2011. He is highly regarded for his historic leadership of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra from 1979 to 1996 and his tenure as Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra from 1996 to 2008. He has also served as Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra and held Principal Guest Conductor positions with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Hilary Hahn, violin   Bio

Violinist Hilary Hahn’s probing interpretations, technical virtuosity, and commitment to new music have brought her love of classical music to a diverse audience. At age 33, her international fame and recognition, including two Grammies, multiple Diapason “d’Or of the Year” and “Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik” prizes, seven Echo Klassik awards, and the 2008 *Classic FM / Gramophone* Artist of the Year, are a testament to her talent and drive.

An engaging personality, Hahn is an avid writer and interviewer, posting journal entries and information for young musicians and concertgoers on her website, hilaryhahn.com. In video, she produces a YouTube channel, youtube.com/hilaryhahnvideos, and serves as guest host for the contemporary classical music blog Sequenza21.
