at the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center
The Detroit Symphony Orchestra will honor Philanthropists Madeleine H. Berman and her husband, the late Mandell L. Berman at its seventh annual Heroes Gala.
Madge and Bill have provided decades of leadership, service, and giving in the Jewish community and in education, healthcare, and the arts. The Bermans inspired the creation of the DSO’s Classroom Edition webcasts, bringing live classical music to students throughout Detroit and around the world. Their support has enabled the inauguration of the Civic Youth Wind Ensemble, part of the DSO’s Wu Family Academy for Learning and Engagement. Both of the Bermans have served on the DSO Board, and Madge served for over two decades before being appointed an Emeritus Director in 2013.
The Heroes Gala and Benefit Concert is our opportunity to honor the remarkable men and women who impact the vision, values, and success of the DSO and our community. Proceeds from the event will support the DSO's commitment to transforming the lives of children and youth across our region through music education.
For more on the remarkable contributions the Berman’s have made to the DSO and the broader community through their philanthropy and voluntary service, please see this press release.

About the Heroes Gala
The DSO founded the Heroes Gala in 2010 in honor of the remarkable men and women who impact the vision, values, and success of the organization. Previous honorees are:
• 2010: Jim Nicholson, President and CEO of PVS Chemicals Inc.
• 2012: Lloyd Reuss, former President of the General Motors Corp
• 2013: Barbara Van Dusen, beloved supporter of the arts in Detroit
• 2014: Dan Gilbert, Founder and Chairman of Rock Ventures together with Matt Cullen, President and Chief Executive Officer of Rock Ventures LLC
• 2015: The Davidson/Gerson Family, prolific Detroit philanthropists and supporters of the DSO’s William Davidson Neighborhood Concert Series
• 2016: John A. & Marlene L. Boll, John A. & Marlene L. Boll Foundation
Proceeds from this year's event will support the DSO's commitment to transforming the lives of children and youth across our region through music education. The DSO’s Wu Family Academy for Learning and Engagement is proud to serve thousands of area youth each season through weekend youth ensemble training, educational concerts in Orchestra Hall, and in-school programming. Now, thanks to the bi-annual Live From Orchestra Hall: Classroom Edition webcast series supported by the Mandell L. and Madeleine H. Berman Foundation, tens of thousands of students in Detroit and across the U.S. can experience a live orchestra concert from their own classroom.
