Concert Description

Exciting Detroit debuts and an American classic! Leonard Slatkin leads the world premiere of his own 'Endgames,' and Cindy McTee's 'Solstice' featuring DSO principal trombone Kenneth Thompkins. The program concludes with Benjamin Lees' Concerto for String Quartet (first performed by Slatkin and the St. Louis Symphony) plus a Gershwin classic — An American in Paris.

Leonard Slatkin, conductor  Bio

Internationally acclaimed American conductor Leonard Slatkin began his appointment as Music Director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in September of 2008. He was recently named Music Director of the Orchestre National de Lyon (ONL), France, beginning with the 2011-12 season. In addition, Mr. Slatkin continues to serve as Principal Guest Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, a post that began in the fall of 2008.

James VanValkenburg, viola   
Kenneth Thompkins, trombone   Bio

Kenneth Thompkins was appointed Principal Trombone of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra by Neeme Järvi in 1997. Prior to this appointment, he held positions in the Buffalo Philharmonic and the Florida Orchestra and performed with the New World Symphony under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas. A former participant in the Detroit Symphony’s African American Fellowship Program, he has been a mentor to several Orchestra Fellows over the years.

Hai-Xin Wu, violin   Bio
Violinist Hai Xin Wu joined the Detroit Symphony Orchestra violin section in July 1995 and was appointed Assistant Concertmaster of DSO in June 2004. He previously performed throughout the United States, Europe and his native China.
