Civic Philharmonic Orchestra

Civic Philharmonic Orchestra offers advanced musicians the opportunity to experience challenging repertoire while continuing to develop their musicianship. Philharmonic is open to advanced strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion musicians of high school ages.  Repertoire includes standard full symphonic literature works, in addition to several world premieres commissioned especially for the orchestra. Three performances are given each year as a part of the Civic Family Experience concerts in the Max M. Fisher Music Center.

Membership is by placement audition only and previous ensemble experience is required.


 

Civic Concert Orchestra

Civic Concert Orchestra provides musicians the chance to enhance their ensemble skills and musicality through performance of selections from and arrangements of orchestral repertoire. Basic technique and artistic vocabulary is reinforced. Open to intermediate and advanced strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion musicians. Concert Orchestra provides an opportunity to develop the ensemble skills necessary to advance to standard full symphonic repertoire.  Three performances are given each year as a part of the Civic Family Experience concerts in the Max M. Fisher Music Center.

Membership is by placement audition only and previous ensemble experience is required.


Civic Sinfonia Orchestra

Civic Sinfonia Orchestra is open to intermediate strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion musicians. This orchestra will explore concert repertoire for orchestra in a setting that encourages the development of technical precision, leadership, and musical artistry. Musicians must be able to read music in order to be eligible for the Sinfonia Orchestra. Sinfonia presents three performances each year as a part of the Civic Family Experience in the Max M. Fisher Music Center.

Membership is by placement audition only.


Civic String Orchestra Presto

Civic String Orchestra Presto is the most advanced String Orchestra in the CYE program.   This ensemble will continue to enhance the fundamentals of large ensemble playing. Civic String Orchestra Presto is open to all intermediate musicians of violin, viola, cello, and double bass.  Rehearsals will focus on the mastery of essential ensemble performing techniques such as, listening, intonation, and blend of sound through the performance of standard and contemporary string orchestra repertoire. Civic String Orchestra Presto presents three performances each year as a part of the Civic Experience concert in the Max M. Fisher Music Center.

Civic String Orchestra Presto Audition Benchmarks

  • Shifting into 4th position                    
  • Familiar with Suzuki Book 3
  • Familiar with various time signatures
  • Key signatures with up to 4 sharps or 3 flats
  • At least four years of experience on instrument

Ensemble may be offered based upon sufficient interest from students.

Civic String Orchestra Allegro

Emphasizing the fundamentals of large ensemble playing, string orchestra is an ideal large ensemble experience for intermediate students of violin, viola, cello, and double bass. Students must be able to read music to be eligible for String Orchestra Allegro. Rehearsals will focus on the developing vital performing techniques such as, listening, intonation, and blend of sound. String Orchestra Allegro presents three performances each year as a part of the Civic Experience concert in the Max M. Fisher Music Center.

Civic String Orchestra Allegro Audition Benchmarks

  • Shifting into 2nd and 3rd position
  • Understanding of Suzuki Book 2 content
  • Syncopated Rhythms
  • Key signatures with up to 3 sharps or 2 flats
  • At least 2 or 3 years of experience on instrument

Ensemble may be offered based upon sufficient interest from students.

Civic String Orchestra Maestoso

String Orchestra Maestoso provides elementary and middle school violin, viola, cello, or bass musicians the opportunity to build upon fundamental instrumental skills and add bow techniques and other essential skills. Rehearsals will focus on continuing to develop the recognition and application of musical tempos and styles. Additionally, students learn basic key signature, time signatures, and terms for expression. Students will receive instruction in music reading skills, production of a good tone, bowing, and left-hand techniques. String Orchestra Maestoso presents two performances each year as a part of the Civic Experience concert in the Max M. Fisher Music Center.

Civic String Orchestra Maestoso Benchmarks

  • Firm understanding of first position
  • Familiar with Suzuki Book 1
  • Understanding of basic rhythms such as sixteenth notes, eighth notes, quarter notes, half notes, and whole notes
  • Understanding of basic note reading
  • Key signatures with up to 2 sharps
  • At least 1 or 2 years of experience on instrument

Ensemble may be offered based upon sufficient interest from students.

Membership is by application. A placement listening session may be held.


Civic Symphonic Band

Open to intermediate and advanced level wind, brass and percussion players in middle through high school, the Civic Symphonic Band provides students the opportunity to develop musicianship, refine performance skills and develop responsible rehearsal habits through the study of core wind band literature. Students participate in three performances each year as a part of the Civic Family Experience concerts in the Max M. Fisher Music Center.

Ensemble may be offered based upon sufficient interest from students.

Membership is by application. A placement listening session may be held.


 

Civic Jazz Band

Comprised of the traditional big band instrumentation, this ensemble is open to advanced musicians in piano, guitar, bass, trumpet, trombone, saxophone, and percussion who want to perform challenging jazz repertoire and develop their musicianship. This ensemble is designed for students with an advanced understanding of jazz improvisation and theory. Three full performances are given each year in partnership with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s Paradise Jazz Series in the Max M. Fisher Music Center.

Membership is by placement audition only and previous jazz ensemble experience is required.


 

Civic Jazz Concert Band

Jazz Concert Band emphasizes jazz ensemble skills including section playing, improvisation, and theory while performing big band standards and jazz classics. Jazz Concert Band is designed for intermediate-level jazz students in piano, guitar, bass, trumpet, trombone, saxophone, and percussion. Jazz Concert Band presents three performances each year as a part of the Civic Family Experience concert in the Max M. Fisher Music Center.

Ensemble may be offered based upon sufficient interest from students.

Civic Ellington Jazz Ensemble 

The Ellington Jazz Ensemble is an excellent launching pad into the world of jazz for students in piano, guitar, bass, brass, woodwinds, and percussion. Students in this ensemble begin exploring the world of jazz theory through arrangements focused on developmental skills.  Students will learn the fundamentals of jazz chord voicing, articulation style, and blues form. Civic Ellington Jazz Ensemble presents three performances each year as a part of the Civic Family Experience concert in the Max M. Fisher Music Center.

Civic Creative Jazz Ensemble

Civic Creative Jazz Ensemble opens the doors of the jazz world to all intermediate to advanced students including those outside the traditional jazz instrumentation such as strings, oboe, bassoon, flute, clarinet, horn, euphonium, and tuba.  Students in the Creative Jazz Ensemble have the unique opportunity to enhance their understanding of jazz theory and improvisation in a non-traditional setting. These students receive a truly unique musical experience, performing exciting and innovative customized arrangements of jazz classics and new favorites. Civic Creative Jazz Ensemble presents three performances each year as a part of the Civic Family Experience concert in the Max M. Fisher Music Center.
