Civic Advanced Studies

The Civic Orchestra, Civic Jazz Orchestra and Civic Wind Ensemble provide the most advanced and motivated young musicians with the highest level of performance experiences.

Civic Orchestra

 Civic Orchestra is the premier youth orchestra in the CYE program. Through advanced orchestral repertoire, students are challenged to perform at professional levels, to strive for advanced musicianship and to continue to enhance their superior technical and musical ensemble playing. Open to advanced strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion musicians of high school through college undergraduate ages. Three or four full-length performances are given each year on the historic Orchestra Hall stage, including perfor¬mances side by side with DSO musicians. Select musicians from the Civic Orchestra perform the full length Nutcracker ballet in partnership with Taylor Ballet Americana each season. The Civic Orchestra has collaborated with Leonard Slatkin, Emanuel Ax, Midori, Itzhak Perlman, Sir Andrew Davis, Neeme Järvi, John Corigliano, Mark Wigglesworth, Pinchas Zukerman and Yan Pascal Tortelier, just to name a few.

Membership is by audition only and previous orchestral experience is required.

Civic Jazz Orchestra

Civic Jazz Orchestra provides students advanced experience in performing music of varying styles from the standard modern jazz repertoire. In this ensemble, Michigan’s premiere young jazz musicians with advanced training that build upon the strong tradition of jazz in Detroit. Open to advanced piano, guitar, bass, brass, woodwinds, and percussion musicians of senior high school ages. Three or four full-length performances are given each year, including performing on the main stage at the Detroit Jazz Festival.  Civic Jazz Orchestra has collaborated with Terrance Blanchard, Sean Jones, Wynton Marsalis, Jeff Tyzik, Sean Jones, Regina Carter, Carl Allen, Wycliffe Gordon, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Jon Faddis, and Branford Marsalis, just to name a few.

Membership is by audition only and previous jazz ensemble experience is required.

Civic Wind Ensemble

Civic Wind Ensemble provides opportunities to study and perform works from the wind repertoire of the sixteenth through the twenty-first centuries. Civic Wind Ensemble students study instrumental works in a broad range of styles, as well as world premieres including pieces for full wind ensemble and chamber music. Open to advanced level wind, brass and percussion musicians, this ensemble provides students with opportunity to perform intensive and demanding repertoire.  Students participate in three full concerts each season on the historic Orchestra Hall Stage.

Membership is by audition only and previous band or orchestra experience is required.
