What is RSS?

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a web feed format that is used to publish frequently updated digital content, such as news feeds or podcasts.  Users of RSS content use programs called feed "readers" or "aggregators": the user subscribes to a feed by supplying to his or her reader a link to the feed.  The reader can then check the user's subscribed feeds to see if any of those feeds have new content since the last time it checked.  If there is new content, the reader will retrieve that content and present it to the user.

How to subscribe to the DSO Feeds

Many newer web browsers and a variety of programs known as a feed readers or aggregators can check RSS-enabled webpages on behalf of any user and display the content.  Depending on the source, RSS will deliver the entire text of the story to your newsreader, or just the first paragraph or headline. Clicking on a headline will take you straight to the full story via your web browser.

Many newsreaders are available as standalone programs or as extensions of existing programs such as web browsers. Web-based feed readers and news aggregators require no software installation and make your feed available on any computer with Web access.

News Aggregators

Aggregator features are being built into portal sites such as My Yahoo! and Google; modern web browsers; and e-mail programs.  The aggregator provides a consolidated view of the content in a single browser display or desktop application. These applications are also referred to as RSS readers, feed readers, feed aggregators, or news readers.

Browser-Based Readers and Live Bookmarks

If you have a newer broswer such as Internet Explorer 7 or Mozilla Firefox, click on the orange RSS icon in the browser to activate the automatic display of the feed.  The RSS icon should appear in the browser toolbar or lower corner of the browser.
